Moira's grandfather is very upset when she refuses to use her sword in the competition to see who will serve in the Roman senate. He tries to explain that if she isn't going to exercise her rights to influence the government, the investments that he and her grandmother made to get her those rights will all be for nothing, and that if ever some crook comes into power, it might be too late to try using them then.
